Final Track: 7 Must-Hear Songs Of The Week

It’s impossible to cover each bit of new music that comes out during the week, so every Friday, we’ll be doing an end of the week music roundup. It’s called Final Track, and we’ll count off a few songs released during the week that are worth giving a listen to. (Banner via)

Today, we’ve got selections from Joey Bada$$, F*ck Buttons, Heliotropes, and more.

James Murphy speaking event

DFA Records just celebrated their 12-year anniversary, and as part of the Red Bull Music Academy festivities, the influential label’s founder/LCD Soundsystem mastermind James Murphy spoke in New York City about his personal influences and the process behind his legendary DJ sets. About the B-52s’ “Rock Lobster,” he said, “That is actually the most influential guitar part to me in my life,” without a trace of irony. See the whole speech above.

“Word Is Bond” by Joey Bada$$

“The Red Wing” by F*ck Buttons

If three minutes seems oddly short for a F*ck Buttons song, that’s because it is — the version of “The Red Wing” embedded here is the single edit. The longer one will appear on the noise duo’s upcoming album, Slow Focus.

“Quatto” by Heliotropes

Yes, that is a Total Recall reference, and yes, this Brooklyn foursome is blisteringly unforgiving (and great).

“Years” by Hodgy Beats

The Odd Future cloud expands a little further, with a new EP from Hodgy Beats, Untitled 2, due out June 1st. Here’s its introspective first listen, “Years.”

Brass Tactics EP by David Byrne and St. Vincent

David Byrne and St. Vincent unloaded extra material from last year’s Love This Giant onto a thankful public with this free-to-download EP, as well as live pumped-up versions of her “Marrow” and his “Road to Nowhere.”

”Banana Clipper” by El-P and Killer Mike ft. Big Boi

A predictably booming, barked-out banger from the all-star team of El-P and Killer Mike (with special guest Big Boi), who will release a collaborative (and free) album, Run the Jewels, next month, before hitting the road together. That should be on EVERYONE’s “What I Did This Summer” assignment.
