“Together” by Disclosure, Nile Rodgers, and Sam Smith
Nile Rodgers has gone through a career resurgence of sorts, thanks to his working with Daft Punk. The latest name to hook up with the Chic founder: Disclosure. Their collaboration with Sam Smith yielded “Together,” a perfect mashup of Rodgers’ funk and Disclosure’s glitches.
“Stay Ready (What a Life)” by Jhene Aiko ft. Kendrick Lamar
The absurdly sensual Jhene Aiko gets an R&B assist from Kendrick Lamar on her latest romantic single, taken from her debut Def Jam EP, Sail Out.
“Ain’t Nothin” by Willie the Kid ft. Boldy James

“Lariat” by Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks
Earlier in the week, we saw live video footage of the Jicks’ first show in some time. Those were all covers (does Malkmus playing a Pavement song with the Jicks count as a cover?), but now we’ve got a listen to their new album, Wig Out at Jagbags. It’s called “Lariat,” and I’m in love with the woman in the music video.
“Forgiven/Forgotten” by Angel Olsen
According to a press release, Angel Olsen “explores a sound familiar, but only widens her vocal range to new expressive heights. She captures both bravery and vulnerability in her war cries bringing the listener closer if they aren’t already sucked into Angel’s crackling fire gaze.” I have no idea what that means. A far more apt description of “Forgiven/Forgotten” is evocative garage-rock.
“Silver Haired Daddy of Mine” by Billie Joe Armstrong and Norah Jones
Another surprisingly good, lovingly tender cover of the Everly Brothers from Billie Joe and Norah.
“FUCKMYLIFE666″ by Against Me!
Laura Jane Grace will put out her first album as Laura Jane Grace, and not Thomas James Gabel, in January, when Transgender Dysphoria Blues is released. “Osama bin Laden as the Crucified Christ” is the obvious track title highlight, but the determined “FUCKMYLIFE666” is pretty great, too.
