It should come as no surprise that Dave Grohl is a big Lorde booster. The 17-year-old singer/songwriter performed with “Nirvana” at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, after all. But it took until an interview with Rolling Stone for Grohl to say just how much he enjoys her music.
“When I first heard ‘Royals’ it was sandwiched between all of that other stripper pop,” [Grohl] says. “I was so f*cking relieved. I thought, ‘Hey, this might be another revolution.’ When I met her I said, ‘When I first heard your song on the radio and my kids sang along I felt like there was hope for my kids to grow up in an environment which is more than just superficial.'” (Via)
That’s a little hyperbolic on Grohl’s part (to disregard ALL of top-40 radio is to look past everything positive about artists like Adele and Beyoncé), but the point remains. Even if you don’t like “Royals,” you have to admit it sounds refreshing and, most importantly, different when awkwardly wedged between “Timber” and “#SELFIE.” No wonder Grohl compared her to Nirvana.
When he decided to bring in a group of female singers to front Nirvana at the Hall of Fame, he had little doubt that Lorde would fit in perfectly. “There’s something about her that represented or resembled the Nirvana aesthetic,” he says. “She has an incredible future ahead of her as a writer, performer and vocalist.” (Via)
Courtney Love has added another name to the list.
