The Decemberists have a new album out, What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World, which is also an accurate way to describe the YouTube comments section. Every so often, you’ll find a restore-your-faith-in-humanity gem — I’m partial to “FIRST”; it’s just so unique — but mostly, it’s a lot of garbage-people and Nigerian princes stinking up the Internet with their stink.
Yet it all sounds pretty good when sung by the Nick Offerman-approved Decemberists, who have now appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Portlandia, Parks and Recreation, and The Simpsons. Not bad for a band that sings about ancient Japanese folk tales for a living.
