Some members of Congress will be fundraising at an upcoming Taylor Swift concert, because there is no better place to discuss policy than at a Taylor Swift concert.

For only a few thousand dollars, Taylor Swift fans can see her show at Nationals Stadium in Washington D.C. and sit next to a member of Congress, presumably to discuss education reform and the estate tax between “You Belong With Me” and “Blank Space”:

At least four lawmakers have planned fundraisers at her upcoming concert, according to two invitations obtained by the Loop and two by The Sunlight Foundation. For $2,500 a pop you can enjoy the show with Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.), Rep. Lois Frankel (D-Fla.) or Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-Ill.).

But! If you’re not partisan, and you’re looking for a bargain, you could always go sit in the Rep. Steve Stivers (R-Ohio) suite. He’s offering a discounted rate of $1,500 per ticket. And for $2,500, you can bring a friend.

This seems like an odd donor perk. Not to say that Taylor Swift fans or young people in general don’t care about politics, but if someone is going to a Taylor Swift concert, they are probably much more excited about seeing Taylor Swift than whoever is sitting next to them.

Before diving into the next election cycle with its mud slinging and attack ads, however, maybe some Taylor Swift inspiration is exactly what these members of Congress need: “Someday I’ll be big enough so you can’t hit me, and all you’re ever gonna be is mean.”
