Jenn Wasner is primarily known for her work with Wye Oak, but recently she has been staking out on her own with a solo project called Flock of Dimes. You may also know Wasner from the fact she’s appeared on The AV Club’s Undercover project about a million times. She, along with the duo behind Sylvan Esso, pulled double duty this week in putting together a couple excellent covers for Undercover.
Wasner took the lead for a cover of Crowded House’s “Don’t Dream It’s Over.” The original is excellent, and this cover does it justice while still putting a unique spin on it. You may also recall this song from the time Miley Cyrus and Ariana Grande covered it while wearing onesies. Which cover is better? We’ll let America decide.
Meanwhile, earlier this week Sylvan Esso took the lead, with Wasner providing backing vocals, for a cover of “Everything is Free” by Gillian Welch. That song is less well-known, but even if you haven’t listened to the original, check out the cover, because it is fantastic.
Also, AV Club noted that these songs will be released on a limited edition vinyl that will come out November 27. They are only pressing 500 of them, which are already available for pre-order, so get on top of it, people!
