Watch Father John Misty Perform ‘I Love You, Honeybear’ On ‘Conan’

J. Tillman’s alter ego Father John Misty visited Conan to perform the title track from I Love You, Honeybear last night and kept his streak of excellent late show performances alive.

There’s something about the depressingly dated format of a late night talk show that brings out the best in Tillman’s parody of a ’70s lounge lizard. He’s just in his element.

It’s not as great as his heartbreaking performance of “Bored in the USA” on Letterman, but few performances are. It’s not exactly fair to hold an artist up to their best day every time they step to the microphone.

Though Misty has been touring around his latest release since it came out in February, fans and late-show programmers alike won’t have to wait long for new material. According to Tillman, a new album is already written, and it has a much larger scope than his previous efforts.

“I have no interest in writing about love anymore. I’m kind of worn out on that,” he said, before adding that fans should expect more tracks like “Bored in the USA” and “Holy Sh*t,” which find the insular FJM looking outward.

Colbert and Conan are already penciling him in, no doubt. And when he delivers performances like the one above, can you blame them?
