This Band Recorded An Entire Concept Album About ‘Space Jam’

Even after nearly two decades, the tour de force basketball film Space Jam is still touching lives. Not just because we found out Michael Jordan trash-talked extras at pick-up games while filming. Not just because the website for the film is still active, yet has gone unchanged since 1996. But now, it’s actually enriching lives via charity and entertainment.

The San Diego-based band Sledding With Tigers made a promise last year: If a tweet aimed at helping save a historic musical venue got to 1,000 retweets, the band would record a Space Jam-themed album.

Luckily, nearly a year later, the tweet reached that milestone. Thus, here we are today with the album Come On And Slam dropping on July 28. With track titles like “The Ballad Of Charles Barkley” and “Short People By Newman From Seinfeld,” there’s no way this album could disappoint.

The original Space Jam Soundtrack had some classic cuts like “I Believe I Can Fly,” “Space Jam,” “Hit Em High,” and “Fly Like An Eagle,” to name a few. Now almost 20 years later, Sledding With Tigers are carrying on that intergalactic legacy. If only they could have their lyrics ghostwritten by Jay Z, too.

Listen to “Take It From Me, Michael Jordan” over at Noisey and pre-order the album via digital copy or limited cassette at Antique Records.
