We knew this day would come, but none of us would guess that it would come so soon.

Prince Rogers Nelson, who has spent the last 30-plus years making music that looks toward the future, has finally become a back-in-my-day old fogey. In an interview with the New York Post, Prince said that current music lacks creativity.

“There might be music that sounds like me, but what good is that? You’re essentially in the feedback loop. It’s a bad time for music in general. There’s not a lot of pop music in the mainstream that makes you feel scared, that makes you wonder what’s happening.”

Presumably, the Post just showed up and overheard him yelling this at a passing cloud. The “music died with Led Zeppelin/The Beatles/Loverboy” crowd never actually listened to Prince, which is a shame because now they’re in the same camp.

We don’t feel the need to counteract his point, but we will offer that the most famous musician on the planet currently makes music that is plenty awe-inspiring and frightening.

Prince is gearing up for the release of his 35th album, HITNRUN, which is scheduled to drop on Sept. 7. Hear previews of it here and here.
