Fall Out Boy had a very successful run on their first four albums, all of which went gold or platinum in America, but the band took a brief hiatus in 2008. That’s when things got weird: Pete Wentz formed the short-lived Black Cards, Patrick Stump had a solo album that flopped, and the other two guys just chilled, probably.
Now that they’re back on top with their sixth album American Beauty/American Psycho and hits like “Light ‘Em Up” and “Uma Thurman,” the group is regaining their popularity again. Their new sound is definitely different, but Wentz tells Notion magazine: “When we were recording the new album, my friends would say, Oh, you should do something like ‘Dance Dance,’ or, Is it going to sound like [From Under The] Cork Tree? and I was like, No! We can’t do that. What’s the point making something that sounds like something we’ve already done? But at the same time… you want to remind people of the spirit of your music, not do something that was a direct replication of that.”
Of course. the band has matured and grown up (Wentz even refers to them now as “Fall Out Men”), but the biggest takeaway from the interview is the two potential pop stars he sees the band collaborating with. “We did this Victoria’s Secret show with Taylor and she sang ‘Light ‘Em Up’ with us. She is very in demand, though, isn’t she? I wouldn’t hold my breath. She was so sweet. I’d really like to do something cool with Rihanna.”
We’re not holding our breath either, Petey. You don’t collaborate with Taylor Swift, she collaborates with you. A collab track with Rihanna could turn out to be pretty interesting, though.
