The distinctive sound that brought West Coast rap to mainstream attention was built on snippets of spaced-out funk music, George Clinton’s Funkadelic in particular. Now, the West Coast’s most accomplished modern avatar has brought it all full circle by appearing for brief snatches of a remix of the Funkadelic song “Ain’t That Funkin’ Kinda Hard On You?”

Kendrick is just one part in the shifting, jumping 10-minute-plus odyssey. He comes in like, well, a Funkadelic song, serving the purposes of the party going on around him.

The remix was produced by house music legend Louie Vega, bringing together a grand total of three generations for the re-working of this track from Funkadelic’s sprawling 2014 album First Ya Gotta Shake The Gate. The track (kinda) shares a title with Clinton’s book that came out the same year Brothas Be, Yo Like George, Ain’t That Funkin’ Kinda Hard On You? In case the track alone isn’t enough, they’ve also released two instrumental versions, three dubs and a separate Louie Vega version.
