There’s A Finnish Punk Band Made Up Of Men With Down Syndrome That Is Raising Awareness Of The Condition

It’s official. Finland gets the best bands.

Last month, we found out about heavy-metal-dinosaur kids’ band Hevisaurus. Now, we’ve discovered Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät, a punk band made up of men with Down Syndrome.

The band was formed in a non-profit workshop in 2009 on guitarist Pertti Kurrika’s nameday (which the band is named after). They’ve since gained a bit of a cult following and use their music to raise awareness about people living with mental deficiencies.

“We bring a different kind of perspective into punk music; it’s our perspective. We’re different; we’re four mentally disabled guys, so our perspective on the world of punk is a little different,” said bassist Sami Helle.

The band has been chronicled in the documentary The Punk Syndrome. Check out the trailer below:

Of course, all the good intentions in the world wouldn’t matter if Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät didn’t rip. Luckily, the band serves up some nice proto-punk-leaning tunes alongside their own inspiring backstory.
