5 Albums Coming Out This Week That Don’t Suck

As fun as it is to complain about “music these days,” and how it’s all been downhill since The Chronic came out, it’s even MORE fun to listen to — wait for it — good music. Every Tuesday, a.k.a. Music Release Day, we’ll highlight five albums worth (legally) downloading or driving to the local Best Buy (lolz) for. (Banner via)

Today, we’ve got selections from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Iceage, Beach Fossils, and more.

You’re Nothing by Iceage

Iceage put on one of the most furious live shows out there. Blood and broken bones aren’t uncommon. But on their second full-length album, You’re Nothing, the teenage hardcore punk sensations from Denmark sound professionally mature, though no less intimidating. Their 2011 debut, New Bridage, is a slog of noise, with lyrics that could have been in English, Danish, or etc. — on You’re Nothing, the sputtering buzz sound is more pronounced, with decipherable chord changes and words. It’s also more moody and inward, like Hüsker Dü going from Everything Falls Apart to Zen Arcade. Iceage has matured, but a song like “Morals” will still lead to a bloody nose or two.

Push the Sky Away by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

It’s been nearly 30 years since Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ debut, 1984’s From Her to Eternity, and in the past three decades, the group has gone through as many sounds as Cave has combs for his luxurious hair. Where once they were a post-punk, before dipping into alt-rock, the Bad Seeds are now most interested in haunted piano-and-string ballads, full of brief electronic blips. The lush, pleasing Push the Sky Away sounds like a next day drunk’s world weary retort…to something. Cave’s lyrics are predictably cryptic, though never not evocative. “She was a catch/We were a match/I was the match/That would fire up her snatch” says it all, really.
