Beck's Back, And He's Rapping With Childish Gambino

Here’s a collaboration that just makes sense: Childish Gambino (a.k.a. Donald Glover) released a song on his website yesterday, “Silk Pillows,” that includes an appearance from alt-rock hero Beck. And yes, over a skittish, piano-driven beat, Beck raps, something we haven’t heard much of since his 2006 album, The Information.

For Glover, working with Beck must be a dream come true. He was born in 1983, making him the perfect age to enjoy Odelay (Beck’s masterpiece) when it came out in 1996. Also, just like Gambino, who’s respected in multiple fields (comedy and rap), Beck has constantly reinvented himself throughout his career, beginning as an anti-folk rocker before becoming a head-in-a-jar who played a three-hour version of “Sexx Laws.”

“Silk Pillows,” the third single from Gambino’s upcoming mixtape, can be downloaded here. Also be sure to check out Beck’s first song, “I Just Started Hating Some People Today,” for Jack White’s Third Man Records.
