Ben Gibbard Of Death Cab For Cutie Stormed Off Stage Mid-Set Due To Some Unruly Fans

Death Cab for Cutie does not play the kind of music that gets people riled up and angry. Sure, they may stir the heart, but they aren’t exactly Fear on Saturday Night Live. However, things got testy recently at a Death Cab concert in South Carolina, and it got so bad that frontman Ben Gibbard stormed off the stage.

The band was in the midst of their hit “Soul Meets Body” when Gibbard took out his ear piece, put down his guitar, and tried to keep singing. That failed, at which point he threw down his mic stand, and left the stage in a huff. What got him to this point, though, is a little murky.

One report indicates that somebody in the crowd threw something at Gibbard. There is video that shows something happening in the front row, and security being called over. Another report from a fan at the show in Charleston, though, did not mention anything being thrown. This report, though, indicates there were some “drunken” fans in the front row being very obnoxious, screaming along with every song and trying to start a mosh pit, which just doesn’t quite work at a Death Cab show. When things got testy, they tried to start a fight, at which point the commotion seems to have become too much for Gibbard.

Gibbard did return eventually, and although the set was abridged, the band did bring out Lauren Mayberry from CHVRCHES to perform “Brothers in a Hotel Bed.” So, for future reference for people planning on attending a Death Cab show, it is advised to not get drunk and try and fight people. Ben Gibbard will not be pleased if you do.
