Premiere: Hear Casey Dienel’s Stormy, Magnetic Pop Crash Down On New Single ‘Thrasher’

Earlier this month Casey Dienel announced a new album under her own name, instead of her previously used title White Hinterland, and shared the lead single “High Times.” That track kicked off Dienel’s new solo album Imitation Of A Woman To Love and the launch of her own label, Paddle Your Own Canoe Society, which will kick off with the release of this album on May 18. “High Times” is a glitzy ode to ’80s hedonism in Palm Springs, and stretches across six minutes of blitzed-out, raging synths and Casey’s own thrashing alto.

So, it’s completely fitting that the follow-up track off the record, which we’re premiering today, is ever-so-appropriately named “Thrasher.” That’s kind of the best word to describer her sound — thrasher-pop — and this song picks up all the same magnificent, blown out threads that “High Times” introduced. It’s got a pressurized, amped up beginning that quickly builds to a crescendo off the bat, before her voice comes in over the top like a wave gaining speed and momentum. All that pressure shatters again on the chorus, which is punctuated by howls, chattering and gorgeous harmonies.

The effect of the whole thing is something like a thunderstorm, beautiful in chaos, and the message of the song is one of holding steadfast to yourself, and never giving up, no matter how dark the water may get. Reminder: Dienel produced and played everything you hear herself in her own studio. The only other woman I can think of who can claim a similar level of ownership right now in electronic music is Grimes.
