Welcome back, fellow Empire devotees. First and foremost, I apologize for not dropping anything last week. Not much happened from a music perspective — just plenty of juicy drama. But Wednesday night came back with a good dose of both, so let’s get into it.

The Empire Banger

Yes, Jamal’s “Never Love Again” basically foreshadowed the end of his and Michael’s relationship (plus, Ne-Yo acting as a vocal coach is GIFable in all the best ways), but Freda’s “Why Go” was, well, absolute flames. From the grimy production to that infamous triplet flow (Migos should be proud), Freda is becoming a force to be reckoned with. The recording booth should’ve blown up, but because it didn’t, that just means she has harder bars to share. She’s essentially carrying Gutter Records on her back, but it’s fine. “Why Go” shows her potential and untapped power as an artist, which Lucious might see as benefit now, but possibly not down the road.
