The albums we’re treated to this week could not be more different. And that’s okay — different can be a good thing. That could not be more evident than with FKA Twigs who dropped a surprise record on all of us. Wondaland Records, brainchild of renaissance woman Janelle Monae, has a label compilation dropping this week, and that whole collective pride themselves on being unique and different.

In addition to all of that, we’ve got new stuff from Grace Potter, Chinx, B.o.B, and way more. Here are the new albums you need to hear this week.

FKA Twigs – M33L155X

2014’s LP1 was an adrenaline shot out of nowhere from FKA Twigs. Borrowing from late ’80s/early ’90s club culture and combining it with the synthpop and alt R&B of today, her debut album hit a sweet spot for a lot of listeners. Her new EP M33L155X, that’s pronounced “Melissa” for those playing along at home, continues along on this delightful convergent path.

Tracks like “Figure 8” and “Glass & Patron” have already proven to be jams, and to celebrate the release, the English singer unveiled a 16-minute video to be a companion piece to the album. She may have a steeper learning curve for some, but there are fewer artists who are putting out more creative stuff than FKA Twigs.

Various Artists – Wondaland Presents: The Eephus

If Janelle Monae wanted to launch her label, Wondaland Records with a big splash, she’s certainly done that. Wondaland Presents: The Eephus houses one of the summer’s biggest hits in Jidenna’s “Classic Man” and its remix with Kendrick Lamar, as well as Monae’s hit “Yoga” from earlier this year.

But there’s also some great new material here too from the lesser-known Wondaland stars like Roman GianArthur, St. Beauty, and Deep Cotton. While Janelle’s protest song with Jadenna, “Hell You Talmbout,” did not make the EP, possibly because it was recorded rather spontaneously, that energy of individuality and standing tall for who you are is all throughout this compilation.

Grace Potter – Midnight

Grace Potter has been a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to music for more than a decade now. She’s done blues, alt-rock, hard rock, folk, country — you name it, she’s probably shredded it on stage. Now with her second solo record apart, from her day job with the Nocturnals, she’s dipping into funkier rock territory. There are definite shades of Prince on songs like “Look What We’ve Done” and “Alive Tonight.”

It’s always fun when someone who you think can’t surprise you anymore manages to do it again, and Midnight is yet another example of the kind of finesse that Grace Potter is capable of.

Here are the rest of the week’s releases:
