Grammy-Hating Bon Iver Is On The Grammy Poster Even Though Bon Iver Won’t Be Performing At The Grammys

Okay, I have two guesses as to why this exists: 1) The Grammys are hoping to lure in the younger, indie music crowd that typically shuns it, or 2) it’s trolling Justin Vernon, aka Bon Iver, really, really hard. I suppose the answer could also be all of the above.

As you may recall, Vernon has had some harsh words for the Grammys in the past, leading me to be downright giddy with anticipation for a Bon Iver victory speech should he win.

“I don’t think the Bon Iver record is the kind of record that would get nominated for a Grammy — I would get up there and be like, ‘This is for my parents, because they supported me,’ because I know they would think it would be stupid of me not to go up there. But I kinda felt like going up there and being like: ‘Everyone should go home, this is ridiculous. You should not be doing this. We should not be gathering in a big room and look at each other and pretending this is important.

I really feel that way. Because no matter what . . . I don’t think Arcade Fire was compromised, but 98 percent of the people in that room, their art is compromised by the fact that they’re thinking that, and that they’re hoping to get that award. And who is that award given by? It’s like they think it’s literally handed down by the musical-history gods. And I don’t know who the voters are. Like, I have a friend who’s a voter who was like, ‘I had to be a voter because I don’t trust the other voters.’ And I was like, ‘Me either!’ And it’s just not important and people spend too much time thinking about it.”

I can see (Bon Iver getting nominated), but it just doesn’t make any sense to me.

Now I’m even more giddy for a Bon Iver victory speech at the Grammys. Meanwhile, this is what I imagine Justin Vernon is doing right now…
