Great Grandpa Show They’re More Than Just Revivalists On The Knotty, Epic ‘Fade’

Great Grandpa came out of the gate with a song so similar to the sound of Seattle circa 1991 that it had to be called out. While the lead-off single from their upcoming album Plastic Cough was great, it seemed like a bit like aping the legends they came up on. But the group aren’t content to just be really good torchbearers for a long dead sound, and the knotty and modern sound of their follow-up single “Fade” bears that out.

Maybe having such wildly distinct sounds contained within their debut album is an attempt to keep from getting stuck in a slackeresque rut, which is exactly what the band claims the track is about. According to the group — who spoke with The Fader — the single is about “the dulling of pleasure that comes with repeated exposure to the same experiences, locations, persons, etc and the small ways in which we struggle — and often fail — to find newness. It’s the feeling of knowing you need to make a change but not being sure where to start, constantly looking for the next rush.”

While the group might be struggling, you can let Great Grandpa be that injection of newness into your own life. Pre-order their album here and catch them this summer when they hit the road in July.
