Twenty years ago, music lost one of its brightest stars by way of Selena. The Queen of Tejano was already a superstar in so many homes and was on the precipice of even greater acclaim with an English crossover before her life was tragically cut short. In the wake of her murder, the Latin pop world has continued to honor the beautiful singer, including the self-titled biopic in 1997 starring an upstart Jennifer Lopez.
Now two decades later, Lopez delivered a powerful tribute at the 2015 Billboard Latin Music Awards. Singing both her Spanish and English hits, Jennifer Lopez performed alongside Selena’s family band and brought the house down for an emotional tribute.
In an interview earlier this year with Billboard, Lopez said Selena is the type of star who is a one of a kind:
“It has always bugged me that people would try to think that there’s a ‘next Selena.’ It’s like saying there’s another James Dean or Marilyn Monroe. People like that don’t come along every day. There is never going to be another Selena.”
That’s probably true considering her music still endures even 20 years later.
