Someone who dresses like Jidenna is meant for the main event. But the programming gods can be fickle and cruel, so the “Classic Man” singer was left to dazzle crowds outside Madison Square Garden during the MTV VMAs pre-show. Alongside hosts Charlamagne Tha God, DJ Khaled and Lizzo. Awards shows have become platforms for major political statements over the last year, but the outspoken crooner who teamed up with Janelle Monae on “Hell You Talmbout” earlier this year put away his political side and just brought a party with his recent single”A Little Bit More.”
Complete with a whole grip of white-clad dancers and looking cooler than any man ever has or ever will again in capris, Jidenna performed the afrobeat-tinged track that nods to his Nigerian roots from MTVs elevated stage. Though Jidenna opted out of being overtly political, it’s probably the first time that Nigerian Pidgin English has played in MTV prime time, so that’s definitely something.
