Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker’s ‘Chicago’ Is A Folky Slow-Burning Cabaret

In an industry where any semblance of stability is treated like a fleeting luxury, a feisty sense of idealism is absolutely necessary. Josienne Clarke and Ben Walker illustrate that resilience on today’s release of their new folksy slow-burner, “Chicago”, and accompanying video directed by Bob Gallagher. The song announced their upcoming album Seedlings All, set for release on March 23 by Rough Trade Records.

The collection of original songs on Seedlings All broadcast songwriter Clarke’s most honest inner fears, failures, and hubris alike. “Chicago” speaks to the foolishness and sacrifice it requires to even assume that your voice deserves a seat at the table, as the lyrics sing, “Some of it is painful and you’re gonna have to try / But you wouldn’t trade it for all that glitters gold / You only went and made it despite what you were told.”

“They deal with my own specific thoughts and feelings about the reality of pursuing this kind of career, the cost to personal relationships, circumstance and lifestyle, and asking the question — ‘Is this still worth it?’ They’re about trying to find an inner balance in an environment that doesn’t provide any balance or certainty. Where one day everything is brilliant and the next day it could all be over. Where one night ends in a standing ovation and the next starts by playing to an empty room.”
