Remember on “Last Call” when Kanye West rapped about nobody wanting to sign him, despite spitting his best “Jesus Walks” and “I push miracle whips” lines? Yeah, those days are long gone now, but the memories of being a struggle rapper and doing “five beats a day for three summers” remain. To remember them, Kanye tapped into memories of when he fake-auditioned for American Idol.

“My name is Kanye, I’m from the south side of Chicago,” he tells Idol judges Jennifer Lopez, Harry Connick, Jr. and Keith Urban in the above video from E! News. Without missing a beat, he recites lyrics from “Gold Digger.”

“I’m originally a producer. I always wanted to rap and no one really believed in me, so I wanted to try some things out, ya know?” he says after. See, that’s funny because Kanye’s a big star now. Take that, nameless music labels!
