Karen O Has A ‘Psycho Opera’ Coming Out. Who Knew?

Does Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O has created a “psycho opera” that’ll be produced by The Creators Project in Brooklyn’s Dumbo neighborhood in October? Why, yes, of course she does! And that’s her poster — which was released today — above. And no, I have no freaking clue what a “psycho opera” is. An opera starring Courtney Love and Ron Artest, perhaps?

Reports Pitchfork:

The opera is titled Stop the Virgens, and it’ll premiere at St. Ann’s Warehouse on October 12 for eight performances, concluding on October 22. It was co-created by Karen O and design director KK Barrett, produced by The Creators Project, and directed by Pulitzer Prize finalist Adam Rapp. It features songs by Karen with musical direction from YYYs bandmate Nick Zinner and Sam Spiegel (aka producer Squeak E. Clean of N.A.S.A., and brother of Spike Jonze). Karen’s longtime fashion accomplice Christian Joy designed the costumes. The cast of contributors they’ve got is an eclectic one: in addition to members of the Greenhornes/Raconteurs, Money Mark, and YYYs drummer Brian Chase, actress Lili Taylor(!) will also perform.

And in case you’re wondering, Karen-O doesn’t really know how to describe a “psycho-opera” either. In the show’s press release she says, “I have a pretty good idea of what the psycho opera is about but I wouldn’t dare try and put it into my clumsy words. I’m hoping to create an original live experience, it should feel like a psychedelic ride laced with catharsis.” Well that sounds fun! Sort of like a Flaming Lips show. She adds, “I’m in the camp that needs to discover and take risks, sometimes it’s with the promise of something special and new, sometimes it’s to stay awake, either way it’s much more stressful with all the uncertainty but worth the pain in the end.”

Just keep that freaky-banged hairdo of yours Karen O. Just don’t ever change that and we’ll be fine.
