Matt Healy, lead singer of The 1975, may be emerging into the very early beginnings of celebrity, but he’s still far from adjusting to fame. The frontman recently gave an interview to Q magazine, and in it he says that dating Taylor Swift would be “emasculating.” Rumors linked Healy to the 1989 singer last year, but Healy says that he merely made a brief pass at Swift and was shocked to see it make headlines.

“I don’t do anything else, right, so it doesn’t leave a lot of room for me going out, or shagging someone. So the one time I did have a flirtation with a girl it ends up going everywhere,” he said in an interview with Q. “I mean, I got on E! News and people were like, ‘Who’s Matt Healy?’ so that was cool.”

Healy went on to say that he feels dating Taylor Swift would be “emasculating” because it would reduce the singer to being known as “Taylor Swift’s boyfriend.”

“If I had gone out with Taylor Swift I would’ve been, ‘F*cking hell! I am not being Taylor Swift’s boyfriend.’ You know, ‘F*CK. THAT.’ That’s also a man thing, a de-masculinating, emasculating thing.”

Ultimately, Healy said that their brief flirtation was no big deal, adding that the only reason it’s news at all is Swift’s involvement.

“But I didn’t make a big deal out of it myself. It’s not really anything to talk about, because if she wasn’t Taylor Swift we wouldn’t be talking about her. She wasn’t a big impact on my life. It’s just interesting to me how interested the world is about Taylor Swift.”

The interview plays into Healy’s reputation as a bit of a sh*t-stirrer. He recently got into a Twitter beef with the English rock band Reverend and the Makers, using tweets copied verbatim from Kanye West’s blowout with Wiz Khalifa to argue his point.
