Yesterday, Metallica fans were given a very lovely Christmas treat — a 34-second clip teasing what appeared to be music from their next album, the long-awaited follow-up to 2008’s Death Magnetic. That was all well and good, but less than 24 hours later, the video was taken down due to copyright infringement. Metall-rats!

Luckily, there’s a somewhat mitigating factor in play here, as another YouTube clip showing a 13-second version of that video has appeared, and is still on the site — for now, anyway. The brief video shows Lars Ulrich looking decidedly pumped about the epic heavy metal riffage coming our way:

So, no matter what happens of that little video snippet, it appears that we will be getting some new Metallica music coming our way sooner than later. In a recent interview with Loudwire, Kirk Hammett said that the band will likely have a new album out in 2016, and no later than 2017. He also assuaged any fears fans might have about the band getting too old to rock as hard they used to:

“We’re all getting up there, but we still have drive, we still have energy, we’re still inspired, we still have things that we wanna do. You know, mentally, emotionally… I mean, I think that we’re not done yet. And if people like [Rolling Stones legends] Keith Richards and Mick Jagger can do it into their seventies, why can’t we? That’s my attitude. And on a personal level, I’m a musician. I wanna continue to play and perform and do what I do, which is make music. I don’t wanna stop doing this. I don’t wanna stop making music.”

That brief clip will have to tide Metallica fans over for now, but it looks like one of the most enduring metal bands of all-time is about to finally give us some new music to headbang to, which is most certainly good news.
