Roger Waters Plays With My Morning Jacket, Debuts New Song

As the bassist for, and one of the creative fulcrums of, Pink Floyd, Roger Waters is a legendary figure in the world of rock music. As such, his performance at the Newport Folk Festival on Friday was going to be highly anticipated. He delivered, and then some, thanks to the surprise addition of My Morning Jacket to his set.

My Morning Jacket had just finished their own show at the festival when they were joined by Waters, Amy Helm, Sara Watkins, and also G.E. Smith, who you may remember from the Saturday Night Live band. This is the second time that Waters and My Morning Jacket had played together, as they join up for a tribute show for Levon Helm, the father of Amy, in 2012.

Waters, in addition to trotting out some Pink Floyd classics and covers, debuted a new song called “Crystal Clear Brooks.” That being said, and with all due respect to Waters’ decision to break out some new music, more people were probably happy to see him play songs like “Wish You Were Here” for the first time in several years.

Maybe you don’t necessarily think of “folk music” when you hear the name “Roger Waters,” but it was still a pretty major event, thanks to the all-star collection of musicians on hand.
