For years, VH1 Classic was the primary music nostalgia station on TV. Classic rock movies from the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s would be shown, along with plenty of ’80s metal and new wave videos, as well as ’90s alt-rock and pop favorites. The channel also boasted original programming like That Metal Show, which is gone, but not forgotten. Now however, there’s going to be a major change-up, as VH1 Classic is about to be rebranded as MTV Classic.
The switch will take place on Monday, Aug. 1, which is also the 35th anniversary of MTV’s original launch. That day, the network plans to run a marathon of MTV Unplugged episodes, including Nirvana’s legendary performance. The programming for the network will consist of beloved MTV shows from the ’90s and early 2000s, including Daria, Beavis And Butthead, and Total Request Live. We’ll also be seeing the return of Jackass and Pimp My Ride. Additionally, on Aug. 7, the channel will be marathoning the entire first season of The Real World.
This channel will likely be very popular with millennials who want to relive the days when the battle between the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC ruled the world. For those who were fans of VH1 Classic’s video-heavy programming (including a lot more rock), it might be a bit of a bummer, but the thought of seeing classic Unplugged episodes is certainly something worth getting excited about. It seems like there could be something for everyone. The dream of the ’90s, very much alive.
