Why Were The Cops Called When A Teen Put Johnny Cash Lyrics On Instagram?

Teenagers listening to Johnny Cash are rare treasures. Respect them, admire them, crown them prom king and queen. But do not call the New York City Police Department on them. On Wednesday, a student at the New Explorations into Science, Technology, and Math public school on Manhattan’s Lower East Side Instagram’d a verse from Cash’s “The Man Comes Around,” followed by the school’s crest and the date “4/16/15.” Their angst did not go over well.

The Daily News reports that “school officials sent emails only to parents of high schoolers assuring them students were in no danger — but parents of kids in lower grades at the K-12 school were not immediately told. A lengthy email chain circulated among parents Wednesday night and several said they contacted police.” Many students didn’t attend class today, out of fear and because they can’t make sense of lyrics not sung by talking bottles of Bud Light.

Imagine if the Cash fan tweeted “25 Minutes to Go.” The FBI would have been called in.
