Who’s Trying To Buy Who This Week?

By / 11.22.10

Google is in talks with Groupon to possibly buy the local deals website, which started only two years ago and yet already generates an estimated $50 million in monthly revenue from the desirable local retail market. Yahoo was rumored to have tried buying Groupon in the past for $2 to $3 billion.  That deal fell through, and Yahoo unveiled their own “Local Offers” last week.  Groupon was valued at $1.3 billion last April and has been rapidly growing since, and Google is said to have offered more than Yahoo did.

On the other hand, Groupon may just be shopping itself around to get a better idea of its worth in the marketplace before deciding if they should remain their own entity and do an IPO to raise money.  Whatever they decide, they’ve certainly been trying to raise sales figures recently. Other Mypoints members may have noticed emails over the past few days giving 200 points to buy $50 worth of merchandise from American Apparel or Nordstrom Rack for only $25, offers I’ve never received through Mypoints before. Unfortunately, if they’re looking to snag my mighty local retail dollar, they’ll have to break out the “Ring Dings and Vodka” deals, which isn’t a business euphemism for anything. I actually only buy Ring Dings and Vodka.  Breakfast of champions.

In other business merger news, MySpace is teaming up with Facebook to do something I’m sure they’ll say is a great pairing, but don’t be fooled.  MySpace is acknowledging they pretty much don’t matter anymore, and Facebook is saying, yeah, what they said.  MySpace announced “Mashup”, which means you can now easily import your likes and interests from Facebook into your MySpace account.  Yeah, that’ll win ‘em back.

And while Google is trying to get their Groupon, some TSA agents were getting their grope on. But not the sexy kind; the “being mean to a cancer survivor” kind.  A bladder cancer survivor tried to explain to agents that he wears a urostomy bag, which collects urine through a hole in his stomach. He says agents at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport ignored his repeated urgings to be careful with his urostomy bag and instead punctured the seal during a rough pat down, and then allegedly sent the man back to the gate soaked in his own urine. Well that’s a pisser.

  • Earlier this year, for 18 minutes, 15% of all US internet traffic was routed through servers in China that should not have accessed the data.  A large amount of the rerouted information was from .gov and .mil domains, and nobody here knows exactly what China did with the data. So that’s reassuring. (IEEE)

KNOW YOUR STATS

  • Wonder why every Wikipedia page has founder Jimmy Wales staring at you and asking for money?  Because it works. The campaign is bringing in over 15 times more money per day than the second most successful funding drive they’ve run. (InformationIsBeautiful, photoshop at left via TheFrogman)
