Just days after yet another mass shooting in the United States, the University of Chicago has canceled Monday classes and advised students to stay indoors after a very specific threat of violence surfaced online Sunday evening. The threat, made by an unknown person, reportedly mentioned the campus quad at 10 a.m. on Monday morning, according to the FBI.
To ensure safety, the university has asked that all faculty, students and non-essential staff stay away from the South Side campus Monday.
The university said the decision was taken after taking into account “recent tragic events” at other campuses across the country and consulting with federal and local law enforcement authorities.
“We have decided, in consultation with federal and local law enforcement officials, to exercise caution by canceling all classes and activities on the Hyde Park campus through midnight on Monday,” it said.
It’s terrifying that this sort of thing has now become the new normal in our society, but with “domestic terrorism” and news of mass shootings breaking just about every week, you sadly can never be too safe anymore.
