‘Affluenza’ Mom Is Surprised To Find That Her Jail Cell Is ‘Not A Resort’

Like mother, like son. Tonya Couch (aka the mother of “affluenza” afflicted Ethan Couch) appeared in court on Friday on charges that she hindered the apprehension of a felon, in this case, her son. When she complained about how uncomfortable her jail cell was, the sheriff had no sympathy.

“It’s a jail, not a resort,” Sheriff Dee Anderson recounted herself as saying during a news conference. This happened after Couch complained that the cell let in too much light, making it impossible for her to sleep well.

Sheriff’s Anderson’s perspective may be understandable. Back in 2013, Ethan Couch was sentenced to 10 years probation for causing a drunk driving accident that killed four people and injured nine. The judge gave Couch this lenient sentence based on his lawyers’ defense that he suffered from “affluenza,” or that he didn’t know the consequences of his actions because his parents’ wealth had shielded him from that.

Couch may still claim this affliction, because he fled to Mexico this past December in violation of his probation. Tonya went with him, and the two were caught in Puerto Vallarta on Dec. 28, 2015. Now, Tonya is back, while Ethan is still in Mexico awaiting extradition to the United States.

Oh, and let’s not forget that Tonya looks like carrot top.
