Despite finishing with 2 percent of the vote in New Hampshire, Ben Carson promises that he’ll stick around through Super Tuesday. So, he’s still on the campaign trail talking about how Muslims who value American democracy must be schizophrenic.
Dr. Carson reportedly expressed this controversial opinion in an interview with Breitbart News Daily. The reporter asked him whether Muslims can stay true to both Sharia law and democratic values, and in response he leveled the schizophrenia diagnosis.
“I don’t see how they can do it otherwise, because they have two different philosophies boring at you [that contradict each other],” he explained. “That would be very difficult.”
This isn’t the first time Carson has used schizophrenia to describe a group of people. Last year, the candidate said that people who deny God as being inherent in the U.S. Constitution are also suffering from this disorder. As quoted in Salon, “So if [‘In God We Trust’ is] in our founding documents, it’s in our pledges, in our courts and it’s on our money, but we’re not supposed to talk about it — what in the world is that? In medicine it’s called schizophrenia — and I, for one, am simply not willing to kick God to the curb.”
