You may have heard that the Ben Carson campaign released a “hilariously bad” rap song on Thursday. Now, it turns out that Carson was apparently trying to distance himself from the song a day before it even came out.
Mashable found the CNN transcript for Legal View With Ashleigh Banfield, which covered a Carson campaign event in Miami. According to the transcript, an audience member asked Carson about the campaign song: “Dr. Carson, your campaign will release radio ads starting tomorrow that features a rap artist and its demographic – the demographic is a little specific. Can you explain why you’re – you’re going that route? Why rap?”
Carson’s reply is decidedly lukewarm: “Well, there are – there are people in the campaign who felt that that was a good way to do things. And, you know, they’re entitled to their opinions about such things…You know, I support, you know, them in doing that. But, you know, I probably would have taken a little different approach.”
I wonder if that “different approach” would’ve been not rhyming Carson with awesome.
In related news, Gawker has done a deep-ish dive on the rapper who put together Carson’s campaign rap. The Carson campaign apparently published a positive Facebook post about Aspiring Mogul’s previous song, “The Black Republican,” which sampled part of Carson’s book, One Nation. No other word yet on how the campaign feels about Aspiring Mogul now.
