Try To Guess Why Canada’s Immigration Website Keeps Crashing

In March 2016, after Donald Trump won big on Super Tuesday, Google searches for “how can I move to Canada” jumped by 350 percent. No wonder Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia invited Americans to “find somewhere else to live.” The rest of the pitch sounds ominous, now that Trump is doing better in the presidential election than anyone predicted: “Start now, that way, on Election Day, you just hop on a bus to start your new life in Cape Breton, where women can get abortions, Muslim people can roam freely, and the only ‘walls’ are holding up the roofs of our extremely affordable houses.”

Well, it’s Election Day, and Canada is subtweeting the United States and their immigration website keeps crashing. Blame Canada? “The Canadian immigration site,” Recode editor Ina Fried tweeted, “is currently down, presumably under the strain of unprecedented demand.” On the friendly “Immigration and Citizenship” page, you can “apply to visit, study, work, or immigrate to Canada, apply for citizenship, a permanent resident card or refugee protection, check the status of your application, or find a form.”

“Running from Trump’s America” is unspoken but understood. Meanwhile:

There was an explosion in search traffic on Google for terms such as “emigrate” and “how to emigrate to Canada” following the announcement of a series of victories in key swing states for [Trump]. Huge numbers of internet surfers worldwide also began googling the phrase “end of the world” when the news broke. (Via)

America has turned into the “This Is Fine” meme.
