It doesn’t matter who’s running for president, you can always count on the same threat whenever the race for the White House heats up: “If Candidate A is elected president, I’m moving to Canada!” It was en vogue for pockets of citizens to say during George W. Bush’s presidential runs, ditto but with a different base during both of Barack Obama’s campaigns, and it’s popping up again now with every candidate possible having their potential stint in office looked at as a reason to consider a new life in Vancouver. Well, it looks like one Canadian destination is actively campaigning to accept would-be American expats with open arms.
Nova Scotian radio DJ Rob Calabrese has not only heard the loud grumbling about folks wanting to head north of the border if Donald Trump’s elected commander-in-chief, but he’s also offering up a destination for the disenchanted to flock to. Calabrese has set up the cheeky website Cape Breton If Donald Trump Wins, encouraging Yanks to de-Donald with a new life on Cape Breton Island. The sales pitch provided on the site isn’t shy about taking jabs at Trump policies, either.
Don’t wait until Donald Trump is elected president to find somewhere else to live! Start now, that way, on election day, you just hop on a bus to start your new life in Cape Breton, where women can get abortions, Muslim people can roam freely, and the only ‘walls’ are holding up the roofs of our extremely affordable houses.
Those intrigued by the prospect of moving to the Canadian maritimes are also assured that it’s not that cold in that part of the country and what the region lacks in hand guns it makes up for in free health care. “This is not a joke!” proclaims a message on the site that seems in line with the mix of “friendly endorsement” and “wouldn’t you like these things instead?” tone of the CBIFT offer. The push for Americans to consider Cape Breton Island also comes with the nudge that new arrivals could help rejuvenate the region.
Our population is shrinking. A slow economy, in combination with out-migration has us on an unsustainable path. The truth is we welcome all, no matter the ideology. We have a beautiful island, a friendly people, a rich culture and a bright future. Join us here on Cape Breton Island!
Of course, there’s no guarantee that a move to Canada will separate you from a controversial conservative leader. The Great White North just wrapped up a near decade-long run with the incredibly divisive Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Conservatives in power, and that was a stretch stormy enough that some Canucks were looking south to the U.S. as a safe spot. The world’s a funny place like that.
