The Donald Trump-‘Suicide Squad’ Connection Goes All The Way To The Top

“Unwitting” collusion with Russia? “Rigged” elections right here in the United States? There are a lot of terrible, horrible, no good, very bad things Donald Trump’s presidential campaign has endured this past week. Yet the Republican nominee’s hardcore fans shouldn’t worry too much, because it turns out their candidate’s campaign finance chair is none other than Hollywood producer Steven Mnuchin, one of the chief financiers behind the somewhat problematic Suicide Squad. Sure, the latest comic book movie has its issues, but it’s set to make a lot of money and Make DC Comics Great Again!

Trump’s “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon”-esque connection to the Warner Bros. film isn’t as convoluted as outside observers might assume. According to The Wrap, Mnuchin — one of the many executive producers responsible for financing David Ayer’s movie, as well as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Democratic celebrity Bradley Cooper’s American Sniper — is in charge of organizing funding for Trump’s national campaign.

Hence why he discussed the $80 million they raised in July with Bloomberg Politics on Wednesday:

“We couldn’t be more excited about the month. It was just a huge month, up from $50 million last month to $80 million this month. This is only the second month we’ve been doing this, versus the Clintons who’ve been doing this for 20 years. The majority of this is ground support. This just goes to show you how much support there is for Donald Trump from the ground. $64 million of the $80 million was in small dollar contributions. We now have a million unique contributors to the campaign.”

Of course, what Mnuchin doesn’t mention is the apparent fact that Trump donors who’ve set up recurring donations can’t figure out how to cancel future exchanges. (Mainly because no such options seem to be in place.) That and, as The Wrap reminds us, Mnuchin’s own past isn’t all that clear-cut:

He pocketed money stolen by Bernie Madoff, and Relativity Media, the studio behind The Fighter, once accused his bank of “violating bankruptcy procedures and for delaying the release of a movie recently considered to be the studio’s savior.”

Oh and he totally supported Hillary Clinton back in the day. (Mid-2000s, to be precise.)
