Elizabeth Banks Compares Donald Trump To Her ‘Hunger Games’ Character At The DNC

Actor and director Elizabeth Banks hosted the primetime portion of the Democratic National Convention‘s second night, where she opened with her best Donald Trump impression: entering in front of a giant, white backlight, shrouded by a fog machine, to Queen’s “We Are The Champions,” just like the GOP nominee did last week in Cleveland. “The Trump campaign is so hard up for money, I just bought that fog machine on eBay for 30 bucks,” Banks joked, trying to rally a crowd that remained mostly muted until former Attorney General Eric Holder took the stage shortly after she left.

Though Banks has starred in a litany of film and television projects, her colorful role as Effie Trinket in the Hunger Games franchise was the inspiration for the night’s best joke. “I play a cruel, out-of-touch reality TV star who wears insane wigs while delivering longwinded speeches to a violent dystopia,” she said. “So when I tuned into Cleveland last week I was like, ‘Uh, hey, that’s my act!'” Her joke was received with a smattering of applause.

Banks went on to call Hillary Clinton “a smart, committed, successful woman — and not for own benefit, but a fighter for women and children, cops and first responders, healthcare and girls around the world.”
