While Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump continues to lose support from prominent party members, Democratic rival Hillary Clinton keeps gaining endorsements from the most unlikely public figures. Many of the discrepancies have to do with the former’s apparent lack of foreign-policy knowledge, but as a WPTV camera crew in central Florida discovered on Monday, not all of the latter’s latent proponents hail from the GOP. That’s because they spotted a very unlikely (and infamous) face in the crowd at a Clinton rally.
It was none other than Seddique Mateen, the father of the Orlando nightclub shooter, Omar Mateen. Seddique Mateen, who emigrated to the United States from Afghanistan in the ’80s, is a registered member of the Democratic Party. And when WPTV’s Tory Dunnan asked him if Clinton’s campaign knew he’d be there in advance, the elder Mateen mentioned his party affiliation and admitted to receiving a chain email inviting him to the event. Not, however, a personal message from the campaign. “It’s a Democratic party,” he said, “so everyone can join.”
Seddique initially refused to talk to WPTV following the rally, telling Dunnan his family was “cooperating with the federal government, and that’s about it.” However, the not-too-press-shy public figure later met up with the crew at a rest stop to announce his support of Clinton over Trump. “Hillary Clinton is good for United States,” he said while holding a large yellow sign. “Versus Donald Trump, who has no solutions.”
