A crack team of self-appointed cold-case detectives believe they have solved the infamous D.B. Cooper case and are suing the FBI to prove it. On Thursday, TV and film executive Thomas Colbert filed a complaint with the U.S. District Court in Washington to have the FBI to hand over all of their documents relating to the elusive criminal, as reported by Fox News.
D.B. Cooper parachuted out of a plane in 1971 with a briefcase of $200,000, and no one has seen him since. The legend of Cooper has become American folklore, with everyone trying to figure out what happened to him. The FBI gave up in July, stating they were no longer investigating the case. But that didn’t sit well with Colbert, who thinks he’s figured out what happened to the fugitive.
Colbert, who is reported to have some law enforcement experience, said he has a team of 40 FBI agents, criminologists, journalists and attorneys who believe San Diego resident Robert Rackstraw is Cooper. Rackstraw was deemed a possible suspect in a History Channel special on Cooper but was never charged with any crime. Colbert attorney Mark Zaid said his client has compiled 18 pieces of evidence including DNA, forensic documents, and interviews with former wives and a mistress that lead them to believe Rackstraw is their man.
Colbert is no stranger to D.B. Cooper, as he has written a book on the case. He said Rackstraw has evaded questioning for years, and he hopes his complaint to the courts will help him catch his white whale as he said it has been “a scab on the side of the FBI for years.”
