Details are starting to emerge after Monday’s news of a horrific attack on a train in Germany. The attacker bombarded the train Monday night and injured multiple people. ISIS has come forward to claim responsibility for the attack, which was carried out by a 17-year-old Afghan refugee.

But reports are showing the attacker appeared to be self-radicalized and had no direct link to the extremist group. The teenager was heard shouting “Allahu akbar” (“God is great”) as he attacked people on the regional train. State Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann revealed how a hand-painted flag of the Islamic State was found in the room of the teenager as well:

“The attacker appears to have been a 17-year-old Afghan who has been living in Ochsenfurt for some time. He suddenly attacked passengers with a knife and an axe, critically injuring several. Some of them may now be fighting for their lives…There are witnesses that suggest there may be an Islamic background to this but that is far from clear at this point”

But Herrmann reiterated it is still too soon to determine a motive for the teenager’s attack. The recent event is another in a long line of attacks perpetrated by possible Islamist extremists in Germany. There was a stabbing in February and then another knife attack in May. The country is facing a migrant crisis and the Telegraph believes these attacks could be a result.
