Jimmy Carter left the White House in the eighties, but the 90-year-old politician hasn’t slowed down since then. And he doesn’t intend to now that he’s been diagnosed with cancer.
The New York Times reports that Carter, who recently went in for a procedure to investigate a mass on his liver, has made a statement regarding the finding of the procedure and what he’s planning to do now that he’s been diagnosed with the serious disease.
“Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that is now in other parts of my body,” Mr. Carter, 90, said in a statement. “I will be rearranging my schedule as necessary so I can undergo treatment by physicians at Emory Healthcare. A more complete public statement will be made when facts are known, possibly next week.”
Carter’s health has been a topic of discussion for some time, especially after he cut a recent trip to Guyana very short due to not feeling his best. And while he’ll be undergoing treatment at Emory University Hospital for some time to come, he’s hoping to recover quickly.
President Obama has already released a statement wishing Carter and his family well and commending Carter on his courage:
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Rosalynn and the entire Carter family as they face this challenge with the same grace and determination that they have shown so many times before,” Mr. Obama said. “Jimmy, you’re as resilient as they come, and along with the rest of America, we are rooting for you.”
Carter’s prognosis is not known at this time.
