On Sunday morning, multiple police officers were shot and killed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. These shootings followed more than a week full of escalating tension between heavily armored, aggressive police action and those who protested the death of Alton Sterling. Now another police officer has been shot, this time in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
This officer was reportedly ambushed in his squad car at around 2:00am on Sunday morning while colleagues responded to a domestic disturbance call. WBAY in Green Bay reports that the officer was alone in his vehicle when a suspected shooter — now revealed to be a 20-year-old man with a felony record — approached the car in a “vicious” attack. According to Asst. Police Chief William Jessup, the gunman approached the officer and fired multiple shots into the vehicle.
Police are still investigating the incident, but as Jessup described the situation, “This is just another example of the risks our officers take each and every day to protect these citizens.” After officers discovered their ailing colleague, they heard gunshots nearby about 30 minutes later. This gunfire sourced from a man who apparently committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. The Guardian reports that investigators believe he is the suspect of both the ambush and the domestic violence call.
Police spokesperson Sgt. Tim Gauerke revealed that the unidentified officer, a 13-year veteran on the force, did not sustain life-threatening injuries. He’s currently undergoing surgery at Froedtert Hospital.
