A Former Pennsylvania State Trooper Reportedly Kills Two In A Toll Booth Robbery

An armed robbery turned deadly Sunday morning when Clarence Briggs, a former Pennsylvania State Trooper of 26 years who retired honorably, was killed by responding officers after he allegedly shot two employees at Turnpike’s Fort Littleton Interchange in Fulton County. The employees, Daniel Crouse, 55, and Ronald Heist, 71, were reportedly killed when a turnpike fare collection armor truck arrived on the scene.

Briggs allegedly fired shots at the armored vehicle, sending the driver fleeing on foot. He then entered the truck, drove it a short distance to his waiting car, and began emptying money from the collection vehicle into his car. Minutes later, troopers arrived and began exchanging fire from a distance, leaving Briggs dead at the scene.

Turnpike Chairman Sean Logan gave a statement on the horrific events.

“On behalf of my fellow Turnpike commissioners and everybody in the PA Turnpike family, we are all deeply saddened by this horrific tragedy.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the deceased victims, the turnpike employee and the contractor. We cannot imagine what the families must be feeling right now. Certainly, today will be a day that none of us will soon forget.”

The police are currently investigating the home of Briggs.
