Foul-Mouthed Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte Swears That God Told Him To Stop Swearing

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said he is going to tone down his swearing. His reasoning for stopping his potty mouth is because he promised God he would do so.

Duterte has been known to slip in a few curse words when he gets a bit agitated. The Philippine president has gone on record for calling Pope Francis a “son of a b*tch” and telling President Obama to “go to hell,” which he didn’t take too kindly to. It’s become a trademark of his presidential term since he was elected in June. Duterte said he plans to reform his cursing ways, as he had an epiphany while traveling to his hometown of Davao city from Japan:

“‘If you don’t stop epithets, I will bring this plane down now. And I said, ‘Who is this?’ So, of course, ‘it’s God.’ So, I promise God to … not express slang, cuss words and everything. So you guys hear me right always because (a) promise to God is a promise to the Filipino people.”

The Philippine president has been known to be controversial outside of his swearing habits. His literal war on drugs has become violent as he has urged citizens to take to the streets in order to rid the country of drug dealers. He also said he wants to unleash a holocaust-like extermination to rid the country of its drug problems. Duterte’s choice to omit swearing for his vocabulary is, well, strange, but he seemed non-committal while telling an applauding crowd, “Don’t clap too much or else this may get derailed.”
