Donald Trump spokesperson Katrina Pierson made her reputation with tweets about “half breeds,” which earned her a Death Eater comparison from J.K. Rowling. Pierson stopped by CNN to speak with Wolf Blitzer about the Khan family scandal, which culminated with Trump accepting a Purple Heart from a veteran supporter. A few hours later, the father of fallen U.S. Army Captain Humayun Khan told Trump to hand back the decoration, although no one cares that this was only a copy of a Purple Heart. Trump’s intent in accepting the award matters most, but Pierson brushed everything, even Trump’s treatment of the Khan family, aside for her own version of history.
Speaking to Blitzer, Pierson referenced Capt. Khan, who died in an Iraqi car bombing in 2004. She blamed both President Obama and Hillary Clinton for his death because of the rules of engagement, which were policies put into place in 2009 for soldiers deployed to Afghanistan. Pierson made her accusations despite President Obama not being elected (or Clinton being secretary of state) when Khan was killed:
“But surely you can understand the confusion, considering how Donald Trump never voted for the Iraq War, Hillary Clinton did. Then she didn’t support the troops to have what they need. It was under Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton that changed the rules of engagements that probably cost his life! So I don’t understand why it’s so hard to understand why Donald Trump was confused.”
Once again, the Trump team emphasizes how he completely opposed the war in Iraq despite evidence that he was not totally against the conflict. And while there’s been plenty of criticism lobbed towards the rules of engagement, this has little to do with Pierson not realizing that Obama wasn’t president when Capt. Kahn died, nor were the rules of engagement in effect at that time.
On Wednesday morning, Pierson appeared on CNN’s New Day to clarify her comments. She declined to apologize and said there wasn’t anything wrong with her “very simple and true” timeline Hillary Clinton voted for the Iraq war, and “Donald Trump wasn’t there.” This was apparently Pierson’s only point, so she’s disregarding the timeline mess.
