WWE Pulls Back The Curtain With Its Upcoming Comic Book Series

Back in July, WWE announced it would be releasing a new line of comics through BOOM! Studios, and debuted the branded line with a special one-shot at San Diego Comic-Con. Now we have the skinny on what the upcoming, ongoing comic series will look like … and it’s a pretty good concept, especially compared to past WWE and WWF comic book projects. Now only time will tell whether it will join the pantheon of wrestling comic books you actually read … like the Lucha Underground comic. (To say nothing of Booker T’s G.I. Bro.)

The ongoing WWE comic series will be released in January and will feature the stories behind the stories we’re already so familiar with. From a press release:

  • BOOM! Studios is proud to present the most authentic line of ongoing WWE comics. Each issue will feature your favorite Superstars in stories that go beyond what you’ve seen on TV.
  • The first story arcs detail the “Breaking of The Shield.”
  • Seth Rollins. Roman Reigns. Dean Ambrose. Together they formed The Shield, one of the most dominant factions in WWE history—until the ultimate opportunist Seth chose to betray the group at the behest of Triple H, the “King of Kings” who has cemented himself as the authority in control of WWE.
  • Now, following a near career-ending injury, Seth is back on the hunt for the WWE Championship, a journey that will send him on a collision course with his former brothers…

It’s definitely a big step up from “Undertaker got dragged to hell and has to chokeslam his way out with the help of Kane” or whatever it was they tried in the 1990s. I’m definitely a fan of just giving us backstage intrigue and filling in the blanks (something that fans are always clamoring for anyway), and it would be great to read a comic book based on something we love that is actually fun and compelling.

And it’s not like there’s any shortage of unexplained WWE storylines floating around out there. Maybe we’ll finally find out about Oney Lorcan going back to his roots!
