It Looks Like 2016 Will Be The Year Without A Slammy Awards In WWE

Ah, the Slammy Awards. That WWE bastion of weird categories and occasionally timely references. Originally presented as a live MTV special back in 1986 and on syndication in 1987, the Slammys re-emerged intermittently in the 1990s when the company needed a heel to carry around a small trophy for easy heat.

The Slammys were brought back in 2008, and starting that year, they have been given out on an episode of Raw every December. Yes, they have really been doing this every year for the past eight years. This year, however, barring a last-minute change, there is no plan to go forward with a 2016 edition of the Slammys. The bad news is we won’t find out what WWE chose as its match of the year. The good news is we won’t get to yell about what match beat Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Sami Zayn.

PWInsider reports there are currently no plans to present the Slammys this year, not on WWE television or WWE Network or anywhere else, but there’s nothing to stop the company from bringing them back within the next few weeks, or beginning to run them closer to WrestleMania in coming years. It’s almost like they make it up as they go along!

About that “last-minute change” thing: in October 2014, the Slammys for that year were reported to have been canceled, but they ended up just getting moved to a different week in December. So basically it all comes down to how much WWE wants to screw with Brandon, honestly.
