Tuesday night’s episode of Smackdown Live opened with the tag team and women’s divisions in the ring, complete with blue carpet and the two new championships that will be awarded to the new Smackdown tag team and women’s champions.
Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan then made their entrance and explained they would be giving opportunities on Smackdown. Daniel Bryan congratulated the six women in the Team Blue women’s division. Bryan and Shane explained that there will be a Six-Pack Challenge at the upcoming Backlash pay-per-view to determine the new Smackdown Women’s Champion.but with a blue background rather than a red one.
Bryan then explained the six teams in the tag division would participate in a tournament, starting with this episode of Smackdown, that will culminate at Backlash in the crowning of new Tag Team Champions. These new tag titles are the same plates as the Tag Team Championship currently worn by the New Day, but in silver rather than copper, and on blue leather straps, rather than black ones.
The opening segment was interrupted by the hottest free agent in pro wrestling, Heath Slater. He wanted to challenge for the tag team titles and guaranteed he could find a partner that will enter the tournament with him … and win. Bryan and McMahon then said that if Slater and his partner win the entire tournament, they will make Slater a part of the Smackdown roster.
